This is my first entry on my first blog. We’ll see how this goes. I’ll mainly be using this to sharpen my writing and HTML skills, but if anyone finds this site to be informative and entertaining, that’s cool too. I’ve also started working with Picasa for photos. Here is a gilded flicker (he’s part of the woodpecker family) that was hanging out in the backyard today.

Well…its a beautiful Flicker Bob!
That’s not just any flicker!!! It’s a Northern Flicker, formerly known as the Common or “Yellow-Shafted Flicker” and also the “Red-Shafted Flicker,” the latter sub-species you see here, with no nape patch, as you might see here on the East Coast. This is a male with his red moustache. They were formerly considered two species, but with so much interbreeding….they’re just called Northern Flickers now. They are something else huh? Nice photo. I played the flicker call for Ellie and Molly out of that lovely book you sent for the girls, that I’ve kept all for myself!!!! : )
