I’m Floored

I made some progress on the floor. About halfway done. There is some info out there about laying a floating floor. This Old House has a decent step-by-step, and the instructions that came in the cases themselves weren’t too bad. There were a few things I had to learn the hard way.

1. When one picks up a special order from Lowes, one is strongly urged to open every box to make sure the contents match the label. I opened the top box to check the color, not bothering with the rest because it was wrapped to the pallet with cellophane. I got home and found that five out of 12 boxes were Toffee instead of Espresso.

2. The directions say that any sort of PVA adhesive is acceptable. Polyvinyl Acetate is NOT a “Liquid Nails” type of adhesive. A PVA glue will clean up with water. Liquid nails requires mineral spirits and can potentially damage the finish. Many thanks to my friend Terry who saved me from making this stupid mistake. (Thanks for lending me those tools!) I ended up using Titebond adhesive. They have the MSDS’s posted on their site too. I think that’s cool, but then I’m 87% nerd. Speaking of nerd, I thought this was cool, too. Let’s glue!

3. When transferring a measurement from the floor to the board via tape measure, don’t measure from the tongue on the edge of the board. Duh..’cause that fits in the groove, man. So it don’t really count, dig?

The rest of the floor should be in this week- another trip to Lowes.

I’m working at the Wheel this weekend. You should come hang out.
